Tractor T-40. Review of modifications, instruction manual, reviews

Tractor T-40

The T-40 tractor model was produced at the Lipetsk plant from 1961 to 1995. In total, more than 1 million different modifications of the T-40 rolled off the assembly line. Based on this device, a whole line of tractors was developed. In the future, the technical characteristics of this machine were used in the design of the LTZ.

Brand History

At the end of World War II, the Lipetsk plant began producing caterpillar tractors, since many rural residents were in dire need of this technique to restore their economy. However, as time went on, caterpillar tractors were no longer satisfied with their technical characteristics and speed of work. Greater demand was for wheel options.

Due to its wide range of operation and the reliability of structural components, the T-40 tractor model is still in demand.

In 1958, the company completely abandoned the production of tracked vehicles and headed for wheeled models. The first serial production model was released in 1960.

The T-40 tractor has been used in agriculture, road, municipal and construction enterprises.

Almost immediately, the development and testing of a more powerful type of T-40 began. During the design of this model, the shortcomings of previous machines were taken into account. People appreciated the capabilities of the T-40 and began to buy it straight from the assembly line, thanks to which the company was provided with orders for very many years. Until the end of production, the T-40 tractor was in great demand among buyers.

Model range overview

Tractors T-40 were equipped with two engines D-37 (37 horsepower) and D-144 (44 horsepower).

Modifications of tractors with D-37 engine:

  • T-40 - the main model, which is equipped with a rear drive view;
  • T-40A - four-wheel drive was installed on this tractor;
  • T-40AN - a model with all-wheel drive, but with reduced overall dimensions and clearance height to improve cross-country ability on an inclined surface;

And here are the modifications of tractors with the D-144 engine:

  • T-40M - standard model with rear-wheel drive;
  • T-40AM - a tractor with a 4x4 drive;
  • T-40ANM - a model with reduced ground clearance and small overall dimensions.

Technical specifications

Weight and dimensions

The weight of the T-40 tractor is 2370 kg, and the T-40A model weighs 2570 kg. The increase in weight is dictated by design improvements.

Overall dimensions for all modifications are similar: their length is 3660 mm, width is 1625 mm, and height is 2370 mm. Changing the track width in the T-40 tractors is not provided.

Engine

The D-37 engine has a volume of 4,15 liters. The engine is started using an electric starter. The nominal number of rotations of the motor is 1500 revolutions per minute. Cooling takes place with air.

Despite the fact that the D-144 engine has 13 more horsepower, its design is exactly the same, except for the volume and number of revolutions.

Box

The gearbox has 14 positions. In addition to the standard 7 steps forward, there are 7 more positions back.

Control scheme

A distinctive feature is the number of speeds for driving in the opposite direction, since in many similar models they are much less. The maximum transport speed can reach 26,7 km/h.

Chassis and transmission

The T-40 tractor is mounted on a metal frame. Ahead is the motor, which is connected to the gearbox and rear axle. The advantage of this model from many analogues is the transverse arrangement of the gearbox shafts. Thanks to this design solution, it was possible to position the gearbox directly behind the clutch.

It should be noted that a combined clutch is installed in the T-40 tractor. Behind is a block for controlling the rear and transverse shaft. They are able to work both separately and together. The T 40 tractor is equipped with a combined mode suspension. Shock absorbers are located in front, and rigid in the back. Improved patency of the T-40 tractor on country roads is achieved due to the special shape of the treads.

Cab and controls

Tractors T-40 do not have a very comfortable cabin, but do not forget how much it costs. It focuses on simplicity and clarity. The review is not the best, mainly calculated on the visibility of the owner ahead. Climate control in the cabin is also not provided. The dashboard gives minimal information about speed, fuel and oil.

Hydraulics and drives

The hydraulic system of the Soviet tractor T-40 consists of the following components:

  • Hydraulic booster;
  • Distributor;
  • Main and remote cylinder;
  • Lubrication system;
  • Three-point hitch;
  • Flexible connecting hoses.

Attachment

The hydraulic system of the T-40 tractor allows you to put into operation professional attachments that can weigh up to 500 kg.

User's manual

Each owner of the T-40 tractor or anyone who plans to buy it should be familiar with the instruction manual. If the paper media is lost somewhere, then on the forums you can find an electronic version of the instruction manual.

Maintenance

To extend the service life of the T-40 tractor, it is necessary to carry out maintenance in accordance with the requirements of the operating instructions. Cleaning of the tractor from the remnants of dirt and dust should take place at the end of each trip. This will help prevent corrosion on the elements of the device.

Required oils:

  • Change engine oil every 250 hours of operation. For replacement, the Soviet M-10G2k or M-10V2 is best suited.
  • The hydraulic oil must be changed after 500 operating hours. Any universal STOU oil can be used for the hydraulic system.
  • Transmission oil must be changed only once at the beginning of seasonal work. It is recommended to use the Soviet Tap-1V or TAD-15i as fresh lubricant.

Fuel consumption

It is impossible to say with accuracy what the fuel consumption will be during the operation of the T-40 tractor, since it depends on a large number of factors: driving speed, soil quality, type of work performed and engine size.

The lowest fuel consumption will be when using the D-37 engine, its minimum indicator can be 7,28 kg / h.

This is a significant disadvantage, since many people prefer cars with lower fuel consumption in order to save money.

Basic malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

If the engine of the T-40 tractor heats up excessively during operation (the main reason is excessive heating of the oil in the crankcase):

  • The intercostal space is clogged (stop the engine and clean this space);
  • The protective mesh of the fan is clogged (it should be cleaned);
  • Weak tension or breakage of the fan belt (it is necessary to correct its position or replace it);
  • Too little or too much lubricant (top up or drain).

Another reason that the engine is very hot during operation is the increased load on this unit.

The following reasons could cause the engine not to start:

  • There is no fuel in the carburetor float chamber (the pipeline is clogged or the fuel mixture is incorrectly set);
  • Air ingress due to incomplete sealing of gaskets;
  • Problems with the spark plug;
  • Incorrect setting of the position of the ignition angle.

Owner feedback

Here is what owners of T-40 tractors say on thematic forums.

Oleg:

“What can be said about the T-40 AM? Old Soviet workaholic. The patency on any soil is good, the control is simple at any speed, the ease of connecting attachments, the reliability and durability of components. However, there is a minus: the engine cooling system is no good, the engine is constantly heated.
